In Nov 2014, I decided to upgraded my onsite event lighting to the new Profoto B1’s. I swapped out of my travel cases the A/C electric powered Profoto Monolight heads for my newly purchased battery powered Profoto B1’s. When shooting on location, finding an electrical outlet can, at times be a challenge. With the new Profoto B1, I can setup and start shooting quickly without being concerned if and where the power outlets are. However, with the A/C powered Profoto monolights, I never had to concern myself with how long can I shoot or how many flashes. The new battery powered technology can shoot for a long time, however, it has limits. Will the Profoto B1 be able to handle my fast paced backstage photo shoots with one battery, or do I need a charged up spare handy? I did some analysis of prior shoots, number of images, estimating the number of flashes, power levels on the lights, etc. I determined that based on the published spec’s for the Profoto B1’s that they would perform well for me. In real life shooting in 2015, they have done well for me. Plenty of light output, quick recycle times, with sufficient battery power to last thru the critical back stage shoot. In my future blog posts, I plan to discuss some of my shoots where I have used the Profoto B1’s and how they were setup and used. Overall, I am pleased with my decision to swap out the A/C powered Profoto Monolights for the battery powered Profoto B1’s.
